Psalms 139:4-6 ESV
4Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
5 You hem me in, behind and before,
and *lay your hand upon me.*
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.
“his officially anointed heir”
There is something so powerful about that image of God “laying [His] hand upon me.” Stop for just a minute or two and imagine with me for a moment… Visualize the King of All Kings sitting upon the throne, you kneeling at His feet; He leans down towards you and lays His Almighty hand upon you.
I’ll give you a minute to truly take it in: feel the gentle weight, the warmth, the strength and glory – resting on YOU. His Anointed One.
READ Isaiah 61
So much in that flagship chapter of our church! But, let’s focus on verse 1.
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me,
for the Lord has **anointed me**
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted
and to proclaim that captives will be released
and prisoners will be freed.[a]
Beloved, He has chosen you to be His successor on this earth now that Jesus has ascended. Stop and take that in! He looked at you and said, “Yes. I want HER to be my image-bearer. I want HER to continue the work my Son began. I want HER to continue my legacy.”
You are His Chosen One, whom He has anointed to bring GOOD news to the weary, COMFORT to the broken, and FREEDOM to the captives! Holy Spirit within you has equipped you by His grace to fulfill ALL that He has set before you – both for yourself, your family, and your community. You are lacking in nothing!
THINK ABOUT IT
If you settled into the truth about who you really are – The Chosen & Anointed Image-Bearer of Christ – how would it change your response to the world’s voices surrounding you? What would you say to those who are hurting and lost? What could you do to further reveal His character to those within your arm’s reach?
Choose 2 individuals who are within your sphere of influence. Take 30 seconds to pray for them today. Then, take 1 minute to listen to what God’s thoughts are about them. Now, be bold – walk in confidence in who you are – and tell them what He says via text, email, phone call, etc. What would Jesus say to them today? Be His legacy.
I pray that today you would know…that before a word is even on your tongue – He knows what you will say, and before you even took a single step, He had already hemmed you in – before and behind.
Such knowledge is too much for us to comprehend!
