 Family Time

October Word

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Week 1– What does it mean to trust in someone? When we say we trust you we are saying we feel safe and secure that you have our best interest at heart. Trusting in God is saying we believe Him, feel secure with Him, and are relying on Him and His power. When we trust in the Lord with our hearts, we believe He knows best and His direction is always the right way.

  1. Share together as a family what it means to break trust. Parents you can share personal experiences too.
  2. If trust can be broken then it can be earned also. What are some ways we earn trust? (Doing what we say we will do. Being present, honest and honoring. Repenting when we make a mistake……)
  3. God has never and never will break our trust. He is the MOST trustworthy. Take some time this week to share about ways God has been faithful. Write down as a family some things you have to be thankful for, that are evidence of His trustworthiness. (The sun coming up in the morning. The Bible. The Holy Spirit speaking to us. Our home, food, clothes, jobs, school……

Week 2-Gideon had to learn to trust God and was not afraid to have a hard conversation with God. Take some time this week to read Judges 6: 11-16.

Not once but twice Gideon questions God. “Pardon me, my Lord, if you are  with us, why has all this happened to us?” Translation, if you love us and care why are bad things happening.

  1. This week is full of great opportunities to take what the enemy means for harm and use it for good. When something happens to you or your child this week that isn’t fair or good (likely something will) take time to speak the truth into the situation. The way we feel about something bad or unfair that happens, is not always the truth. I might feel ashamed, embarrassed…..but I know Romans 10:11 says that I will never be put to shame because I believe in Him. Everybody does embarrassing things sometimes, it’s normal.
  2. Gideon not only questions God in these passages but he makes excuses. An easy definition for excuse is an attempt to lessen the blame, seek to defend, release from a duty. Nobody wants to be wrong but we all are at times. A huge part of being teachable is accepting responsibility, and not making excuses.
  3. Make time this week to consciously catch yourselves when you are making an excuse. Talk about if this is a moment that you need to take responsibility, and not blame or make excuses.
  4. Here are a few common excuses:

~I’m not smart enough

~It’s too risky

~I’m not big enough

~It’s just not my personality

~We are too poor

~I’m afraid

~I can’t do it by myself

~It’s too hard

~I’m afraid people won’t like me

Catch yourselves and each other (in a fun, non-accusing wayJ) and encourage each other in their capabilities and responsibilities.

Week 3-God used Gideon’s fear and hiding out as an opportunity to call out greatness in him. He wants to do this for us all the time, and we, as parents, husbands and wives, get the privilege to also call out greatness in our family.

  1. Make a list at home with these 3 columns and pray, declare, establish these truths over your home and each other.

I AM                                I HAVE                                  I CAN

Week 4-Last month Pastor Jason taught a series over Confidence Toward God. It’s so good and I’m not just saying that because I am his wife.J

Confidence in God is not the same as confidence toward God.

In God-Believing Him, who He is, His word.

Toward God-My ability, my relationship with Him. Knowing God believe in me.

Did you know you not only need to believe in God but believe that He believes in you!! Below are some characteristics of Confident People. Take a look this week and talk as a family about some areas you are strong and areas you are weak in. Commit to each other to help them believe they are who God says they are. Make every decision out of a position of trust.

Confident People

~Don’t make excuses

~Don’t get easily offended

~Don’t feel sorry for themselves

~Don’t put things off

~Don’t quit

~Don’t seek attention/man pleasing

~Don’t need constant praise

~Don’t pass judgment

~Don’t avoid necessary confrontation

~Don’t over extend themselves

~Know how to take a complement

~They are always learning/changing/growing

~They aren’t afraid to take risks
