According to Luke 1:37, all things are possible with God. Would you be surprised if I told you that just because all things are possible with God, that doesn’t mean God can do all things? While God’s power is unlimited in reference to things that are in accordance with His divine nature, He still cannot do anything that is contrary to His divine nature. There are some things God cannot do because of who He is. The issue is not power, the issue is nature. Here are three examples of things that God cannot do…..
1. God cannot learn anything new. – 1 John 3:20 tells us, “God is greater than our hearts and He knows everything.” The scripture tells us time and again that God is omniscient. God sees everything and He is all knowing. There is no progression in knowledge for God and therefore, He cannot be disappointed. God never expects one thing and gets another. God doesn’t have unmet expectations because He knows the future. I don’t believe that everything that happens is God’s will because we know the Holy Spirit can be grieved. The very fact that we can grieve the Spirit tells us that God’s foreknowledge is not causative. I do believe God knows everything, even the future, and therefore He is able to work all things together for good. The good news is that even if you are disappointed in yourself, God is not!
2. God cannot lie. – Titus 1:2 tells us that God cannot lie. Even if we are unfaithful, God will remain faithful because He cannot deny Himself. Every word and every promise of God is true. When God said He would never leave us nor forsake us, He meant it. Even if I can’t find Him right now, I know He is here. I am never alone. When God said He would remember my sins no more, He meant it. I never have to worry that God is holding my sins against me because He said He wouldn’t. When God said He was for me and not against me, He meant it. No matter what circumstances may look like, I know God is for me and in Him I can do all things. God is faithful!
3. God cannot love you any less or any more. – This may blow your mind, but God will never love you more than He does right now! God doesn’t love me less when I mess up and God doesn’t love me more when I do right. 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love. I’m not saying that behavior isn’t important, I am saying that God’s love is unconditional and isn’t based on my performance. The love of God is not dependent upon its object, it is dependent upon His character. God doesn’t love us because we are lovable, He loves us because He is love and His love never fails.
